About Me

Spenser Sawyers, MAE, LPCC-S #265305

Growing up in the South isn’t always easy for LGBTQ+ people (to say the least!). As a kid I was vibrant and confident—then middle school arrived. I struggled with severe social anxiety, chronic stress, perfectionism, and lacked self-worth and belonging. I knew I was different than other kids, but I didn’t want to validate what the bullies were labeling me at the time—plus I was terrified to go to Hell!

On the outside I appeared to be a successful student, yet I felt misunderstood and lonely. After struggling with my own sense of my life’s purpose after college, I had a meeting with a professor in the Counseling program at WKU and my life has never been the same. Through Counseling, I found purpose in helping others learn about themselves, heal, and grow.

It’s become my life’s passion to work with LGBTQ+ folks and I’m proud to be able to help my fellow Kentuckians learn to believe in their own greatness and overcome trauma, abuse, and toxic programming/conditioning.

I graduated with my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Western Kentucky University in 2015. I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and Clinical Supervisor (LPCC-S #265305) and I am trained in Brainspotting (Phase One) and The Gottman Method Couples Therapy (Level One). I am also a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP). I have worked in a variety of settings including inpatient, substance abuse, and community mental health.

I am gay (he/him) and live in Tennessee with my partner and our sweet and pesky cat Theo. I love spicy foods, electronic pop music, nature (especially flowers and animals). I am an avid tattoo collector and have been working towards completing a bodysuit since 2013 (don’t get me started on how therapeutic I think tattooing can be!). I also love art and collecting prints from tattooers from around the world.

Please contact me today and let’s get started! There’s no better time than today to reach out and be courageous in your healing.
